So, after four years of first stepping foot in Cambodia and another year of planning before that, I will be returning again on Tuesday to the country that I fell in love with all those years ago.The main purpose of my visit will be to co-ordinate, oversee and promote Helping Hand, a charity set up to enable people to sponsor a child from the slums of Phnom Penh to attend a good school and receive a good education enabling them to move on in life and out of the slums. We have also funded other projects such as building a house for a family of six, buying a pair of glasses for a young boy, supplying milk powder for a mum to feed her young daughter with, buying brand new rubbish carts for people to enable them to earn their own living and supplying rice to various people and their families. All this has happened in the last year, so what does the future hold ?
Well, the future is good. What has happened so far has been absolutely wonderful and I had no idea how much simple acts of kindness and generosity could effect people. As anyone who has visited Cambodia will know the Cambodians are incredibly humble and lovely people…..they deserve better than they have. We have nearly 20 children sponsored so far and this is a life changing opportunity for them, and their families. All the children sponsored have passed the entrance exam to be accepted into Beltei school and all are doing well, some exceptionally well. Slum kids are not thick kids….they have just never been given the opportunity. Helping Hand has been established to give them the opportunity and we need to give more children from the slums this opportunity that will change their life.
